The axle can be set on top of or below the springs. Below the springs will give the front end a higher ride height, while on top of the springs will give it a lower altitude. Since the springs were installed higher, it was decided to install the axle to bring the height down by a few inches. Many options are available such as depth of drop, style of axle, 4-bar vs. hairpins, show finishes, etc. NOTE: Sometimes referred to incorrectly as a ‘straight axle’, but this front end will always have a dropped axle. You can picture it as simply splitting a traditional straight axle in two and then hinging it at each of the cut ends. Ford engineers quickly saw that this design would create camber issues if such short axles were simply hinged at the center of the car.

Forged radius rods attach the axle beams to the frame side rails, stabilizing the front end and locking in caster. F Because the I-Beam rotates on this axle pivot, any modification to the spring height will result in dramatic camber changes.
